What is Patch Testing?

Patch testing is a diagnostic procedure used to identify allergic contact dermatitis, a skin condition caused by an allergic reaction to certain substances or chemicals that come into contact with the skin.

When is Patch Testing Recommended?

It is particularly useful when the cause of a skin condition, like a rash or eczema, is unclear. Patch testing helps determine if an individual is allergic to certain substances like metals (nickel), fragrances, preservatives, or chemicals commonly found in certain products.

What Can I Expect During the Test?

During patch testing, small quantities of suspected allergens, such as metals, fragrances, or chemicals commonly found in personal care products or occupational settings, are applied to adhesive patches. These patches are then placed on the patient’s skin, typically on the back. Over a specific period, usually 48 hours, the patches remain in place.

What Can I Expect After Testing?

After removal, the board certified providers at Laguna Allergy will examine the skin for any allergic reactions, like redness, itching, or rash, at the sites where the allergens were applied.

What are the Benefits?

Patch testing is a crucial tool in identifying the specific allergens responsible for allergic contact dermatitis, helping patients and the team at Laguna Allergy pinpoint the sources of skin reactions and develop effective allergen avoidance strategies.
