What is Sinusitis?

Sinusitis, often referred to as a sinus infection, is a common medical condition characterized by the inflammation or infection of the sinus cavities. This inflammation can cause the sinus passages to become blocked, leading to symptoms such as:

  • Facial pain or pressure
  • Nasal congestion
  • Thick mucus discharge
  • Difficulty breathing through the nose

Sinusitis can be either acute (lasting less than four weeks) or chronic (lasting longer than twelve weeks), and it can result from various causes, including viral infections, bacterial infections, allergies, or anatomical abnormalities.

This condition is generally manageable, but it can be uncomfortable and disruptive to daily life when left untreated.

How Can Laguna Allergy Medical Boutique Help?

At our practice in Aliso Viejo, our board certified allergists provide:

What is Blood Allergy Testing?

Blood allergy testing can be a useful tool for patients with sinusitis, especially when allergies are suspected as a potential trigger for their symptoms. This blood test measures specific IgE antibodies in the bloodstream that are produced in response to allergens like pollen, dust mites, or pet dander. By identifying specific allergens through blood allergy testing, our board certified allergists can determine if allergies are contributing to your sinusitis symptoms.

What is Skin Prick Testing?

During this test, your Laguna Allergy provider will apply small amounts of common allergens, such as pollen, dust mites, or pet dander, to the patient’s skin, usually on the forearm or back. If the patient is allergic to any of these allergens, they will typically develop a localized allergic reaction in the form of a small, itchy bump or hive within 15-20 minutes. Skin prick testing helps identify specific allergens that may be contributing to sinusitis symptoms, allowing our team to pinpoint the triggers.

What are Biologics?

Biologics are medications designed to target specific molecules or pathways in the immune system, making them a potential option for individuals with sinusitis related to conditions like nasal polyps or severe allergies. These medications can help reduce inflammation and symptoms, such as nasal congestion, facial pain, and sinus pressure. However, the use of biologics for sinusitis is typically considered when other treatments, such as antibiotics, steroids, or saline irrigation, have been ineffective or poorly tolerated. Decisions regarding biologic treatment for sinusitis should be made after careful evaluation by your Laguna Allergy provider.

What is Imaging?

If you make an appointment at Laguna Allergy Medical Boutique, we can order CT scan imaging. A CT scan can reveal the extent of sinus inflammation, any structural abnormalities or blockages, and whether the sinusitis is acute or chronic. This imaging technique helps guide treatment decisions, including the use of antibiotics for bacterial sinusitis or surgery for chronic or severe cases.

By visualizing the sinuses in such detail, CT scans assist our board certified allergists in developing personalized treatment plans and monitoring progress during the course of treatment, ultimately improving the management of sinusitis and relieving any symptoms. The results could also help determine biologic candidacy for treatment of chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) and/or nasal polypys.
